There’s a Method To the Madness

Method acting may have become an actual method in the early 1900s, but it’s pretty much been utilized since acting has been around. The basic premise behind method acting is centralized around emotions. Actors are asked to draw from their own experiences and emotions when it comes to bringing a character to life or to take your performance to the next level.

As time has gone on, there have been some variation to the method. Now people think that method acting means to simply immerse yourself into your character so completely that the actor is still in character when even when they aren’t performing in front of an audience or who they are in front of a camera. This may come from Stella Adler’s version of the Method based on the idea that actors should conjure emotions from the scene’s given circumstances and not personal experience alone. This makes sense, there are some situations that an actor simply hasn’t experienced and wouldn’t know how they would feel.

With big names like Robert De Niro, Nicholas Cage, Reese Witherspoon, and Tom Hanks saying that they use Method, it is easy to see why Method acting has become so popular. Some people would consider it almost a natural process in making a great performance possible and if these big names in the entertainment industry are any indication, it obviously yields some pretty great results.
